Contest #11: Finalists

Category: Uncategorized @ 5:15 pm

So this week was a little tough, eh?  Only about a dozen brave MMers had a pitch for us this week. I suppose it’s good to throw a difficult one your way every once in a while to keep you guessing. Well, it’s time to determine who the best of the bunch is.

I’m not going to single out any entries other than the finalists this week.  But I would like to thank everyone who showed their movie pitch magic and entered the contest.

Because the entries tended towards very lengthy, I’m only going to include a brief description of the factions in the poll.  I’ll include a link to the original comment below the poll.  You can read the pitch in its entirety by clicking on the link.

The poll will be up until 5pm EST on Sunday.  The winner will be announced shortly after that.

Hey, I’d like to point something out that has kind of bothered me a little bit. It seems like most of the time the entries that make it to the finals are the ones put on Monday or Tuesday (at least for those who do multiple entries). I could be imagining it, but I think it’s because they are up at the beginning and everyone who enters the contest at all will see them and have a chance to say “that’s pretty good” and give it a plus 1.

Now I know everybody loved “Tonion” last week and it’s totally possible that it was my “best” entry (I wasn’t the fondest of it for some reason) because it’s based on opinion, but I tried and tried to outdo it, and I just couldn’t. This week I was kind of disappointed to see my cat vs water entry in the finals rather than what my roommate referred to as my “underwear masterpiece.” Maybe it was just one of those things that I liked and he liked, and the cat and water thing really appealed to others. But, I think some of the best ideas come out at the end of the week because we’ve had more time to think about the contest, and revise our ideas.

I’m not angry or upset or anything, I would just like to find a solution if people agree with this observation. The only two ideas I’ve come up with so far are: 1) make the values of the “pre-votes” (+1 things, I don’t know what they’re called) worth more somewhere around wednesday/thursday. I actually really don’t like this solution, but maybe it will give someone an idea. and 2) Maybe no one can do any “pre-voting” until wednesday or thursday. I’ll throw a third one out there: Everyone could do their best to come back friday morning and try to read all of them and do a little more pre-voting before the finalists are selected.

Sorry for rambling on. I’m not just talking about me though, I have liked a lot of other contestant’s entries that are made too late in the week. If anybody agrees with any of this or disagrees or has any kind of opinion at all, please let me know. (and if you guys at MM like my entry #18 a lot better than the one in the finals, you’ve got my permission to pull a switch-a-roo if you want.)

I totally agree, actually, however, if the “pre-voting” doesn’t affect the choices made for the finals, only the judges need to keep this in mind. Although it seems that the higher pre-voted entries tend to get in, empirical evidence from this contest shows that it isn’t the only factor, as my lower-rated entry is in over the other. Therefore, perhaps no solution is needed, other than this reminder to the judges to consider all entries in by the deadline with the same weight.

I agree with Jakutz’s assertion that points seem to be unevenly assigned to contest entries, but I believe that there probably are several, not only one, sources of bias in point assignment. A parsimonious solution may be that the MM staff choose a larger number of finalists, say 10-20% of total entries, and include not only those bearing the largest points value but those they themselves judge to merit consideration. The winner then can be voted for by all participants at the end from among the 10-20% list of finalists. Just a thought

I may be alone but I disagree with Jakutz’s concerns. I vote on entries all week long and check (and vote) one last time Friday morning before I go to work. If someone enters Friday after I go to work then I won’t see it in time to vote for it. I liked Tonion more than any of your other entries. I also like “Cats v.s. Ice” better than your underwear masterpiece and voted for cats. I too have had favorites of mine that didn’t do well and others that I like less that did better in the voting.

I think it would be better to keep the voting simple. If you restrict voting till mid-week then I may be disinclined to read so many entries at one time. I like reading each day’s entries and voting little by little. I do think that earlier entries get more airtime, so then our challenge as contestants may be to get our entries in as early as possible. If our best idea comes on Thursday night… oh well.

If you focus on the “real game,” it doesn’t matter how the contest is run. The folks who set up the site are looking for creative ideas that will sell. In that pursuit, only their opinion matters. I was shocked to see my quotable hot dog in the store…and delighted, I’ve gotta say. The contest is fun, and the Amazon g.c. is cool, but I guess my egomania dictates that I’d rather lose the contest and win the judges approval and have something I created actually for sale. Actually, the bigger the store gets, I’d rather have a Mental Magma gift certificate!
So, in terms of the “real game”, everything is read and considered. The popular vote is a veil behind which the real decisions are made by people who know what they need and what they want. Gee….it sounds like the Electoral College!

As far as the contest goes, I think the fluid nature of the current set up works well in providing better entries. I liked my “telepathetic”, but it never would have happened without Mrs. Sara’s breakthrough first. The brainstorming/inspiration model serves the “real game” well. And because of that, I don’t think it will be (or should be) changed. Now, as for the Electoral College…

I think perhaps, maybe because of it’s length and effort put into it, that you are biased towards your underwear war scenario. But I liked the cats and water one much better. Much more amusingly succinct; that is to say the underwear one was soooo long in my humble opinion that to pack the same amount of funnypunch per word, it would have had to be genius. It also appears to me that truly well done late entries often make the playoffs whether they net a lot of votes or not, so if it isn’t broke, no need to fix it. More than 5 finalists seems too many to me. Again, just my opinion.

  7. Jakutz Says:
Add karma Add double karma  +0

I agree. I don’t think we should have more than five finalists, because there would just be too many.

  8. Jakutz Says:
Add karma Add double karma  +0

That’s a really good point. I also like to get on here every day and see what’s new. I wouldn’t want to go through all of them again later just to see which ones I should vote for. The best solution, (if any at all), would probably just be a reminder for people to come back Friday and check it out again.

  9. Jakutz Says:

Thanks everyone, for posting your opinions. I’m not trying to make things difficult, and it’s really not that big of a deal. I think the main reason most of us enter the contests is because it’s fun. I was just wondering if there was any room for improvement. It seems that at least some of it was my imagination because a couple of you have already pointed out that you did prefer some of the entries that had the most points. I hope no one thinks of me as “the ass who complained about the votes.”

  10. greg Says:
Add karma Add double karma  +0

“You ass….” — just kidding! I meant to say “boo!”

Nothing wrong with stopping now and then to see if something can be better. I’d rather we challenge things than get stale.

  11. IngShoe Says:

No problem. As we see each others’ entries and comments it’s like we’re all becoming friends anyway.

  12. Bunny Slippers Says:

I agree – the contest is fun but the greater joy is seeing one of your ideas on an item you can purchase! I look forward to the store’s next batch of merch.

  13. Nietsche Pascal Says:

I commend you Jakutz for starting this exchange and enjoyed reading the many comments. How interesting to watch the brains of many fine tune an idea and refine it. In some way, I like the occasional clever and appropraitely respecttful exchanges that spring up among the contestants; make me feel as if we belong to a cohesive community of friends, as Ingshoe suggested.

  14. greg Says:
Add karma Add double karma  +0

Agreed! “It’s like we’re all becoming friends.” Is there a better gift than that? Ooops…I’m getting sappy again. (But I mean it…what a cool thing.)
